As abstract expressionism takes abstraction further, blurring forms by mark makings of the artist. Abstracted and Distracted artist, Gwen Geiss, brings forth a unique perspective formed from life experience. Working in today’s education system, experience with the more vulnerable populations (elderly, young, and disabled), trauma, and navigating adult discovery of neurodivergence while juggling responsibilities of family, add up to a perspective that views the world differently than the vast majority of society.

Art has been used as a communication form for thousands of years. With the onslaught of imagery in daily life, standing out brings attention to subjects that need introspective. Gwen believes that an artist’s role is to provoke thought and conversation. By utilizing unrecognizable forms and using bright colors, Gwen draws attention to the various challenges that we face. Mental challenges create a lense that is distorted by the individual's issues, just as the markings do in expressionism. Bright colors are relevant in stimulation contexts and gender issues. Life has challenges for everyone, but the greatest hurdle is simply ignorance. By using art to start the conversation, people can work to find solutions and understanding in a world that has become isolating in the age of technology.
