Gwen Geiss

"My name is Gwen Geiss, and I wear many hats - I'm an artist, a mother, a teacher, and so much more. Growing up in a small town in Iowa, I always felt a bit out of place. But when I got to college, I found my passion for
abstract painting. I studied both studio art and graphic design, with a focus on print media. After graduating, I ended up in Milwaukee and realized I could make more money by working directly with people. The transition into the
working world and becoming a parent changed my perspective. Compounded with this, Covid really highlighted some of the problems in society. Through the pandemic, I realized the need to make myself and my dreams a priority.

When I discovered that my brain works differently from most people's, I knew I had to be a role model for kids who feel different too. So, I became a paraeducator and substitute teacher, all while making my childhood dream of being an artist a top priority.

My main goal is to make people think. By distorting, combining, and tweaking things, I create something unique in the midst of all the traditional and ordinary stuff out there. And the texture in my work adds another layer of interest.

In the 21st century, we're surrounded by so many realistic and recognizable images. That's why I love abstract art. The process of creating it is challenging and meditative at the same time. I find interesting aspects by zooming in and cropping, which provides inspiration for my artwork. And I have a special love for the thickness of oil paint and the 3-D effect it creates. I've also figured out how to achieve a similar look using acrylic paints.

There you have it! My abstract art style is all about playing with perspective and finding beauty in unexpected places. Even if it’s not obvious to everyone, I’m choosing to leave my mark on the world in this positive way."
